Richard looked at the memory card.
“Here.”
“Why didn’t you give it to the police?”
“Because the recording names people who are still powerful.”
“Who?”
He hesitated.
Then he whispered,
“The hospital director.”
My blood ran cold.
“The police chief.”
I stepped backward.
“And…”
Richard’s voice dropped.
“Your mother’s brother.”
I stared at him.
My uncle.
The man who had attended our wedding.
The man who had hugged Richard and congratulated us.
The man who had told me how happy he was that I had finally found someone who would take care of me.
I looked down at the ring on my finger.
Suddenly, I remembered something.
A tiny flash.
Rain.
Headlights.
A man’s voice shouting my name.
And then another voice saying:
“She’s still alive.”
I grabbed my head.
Richard rushed toward me.
“What did you remember?”
I looked at him.
“The night of the accident…”
He froze.
“I heard someone.”
“Who?”
I closed my eyes.
The memory came back in fragments.
A car door opening.
Footsteps.
Someone kneeling beside me.
And a voice whispering:
“Don’t let her wake up.”
I opened my eyes.
Richard was staring at me.
“I know that voice,” I whispered.
“Whose?”
I looked toward the evidence bag.
Then toward the door.
“My father’s.”
Richard’s face went completely still.
I picked up the photograph again.
My father hadn’t disappeared.
He had been there that night.
And somehow, after all these years, he was still alive.
Then my phone rang.
I didn’t recognize the number.
Richard immediately grabbed my arm.
“Don’t answer.”
The phone kept ringing.
I stared at the screen.
Then a message appeared.
“You finally found the evidence.”
A second message followed.
“Now ask your husband why your father was standing beside him when your accident happened.”
I slowly turned toward Richard.
He said nothing.
And that was when I realized the truth was even darker than I had imagined.
Richard hadn’t been the only person hiding something from me.
He had been hiding the identity of the man who had been protecting me all along.
And when I finally asked him who sent those messages, he looked at me with tears in his eyes and whispered:
“Emma… your father.”
