The mysterious gift prepared by Elliot
Elliot asked the driver to deliver the box directly to the restaurant where the wedding reception was taking place.
Even before the package arrived, he called Daniel.
He apologized for our absence at the wedding and explained that he had sent a special gift.
At that point, I still had absolutely no idea what was in that box.
Elliot hadn’t explained anything to me.
So we resumed our film as if nothing had happened.
Then, about an hour later, my phone rang.
It was Daniel.
I had barely picked up the phone when he started shouting.
« What is this?! How dare you do this to me? Cancel it immediately! »
I moved the phone away from my ear.
I literally had no idea what he was talking about.
Then Daniel revealed to me what Elliot had put in the box.
For the first time in months, I couldn’t suppress a smile.
The « gift » wasn’t really one
Daniel was still shouting when Elliot quietly entered the room.
« Put it on speakerphone, » he asked me.
I hesitated for a few seconds before pressing the button.
« What did you send? » I asked.
Daniel answered before Elliot could even speak.
« Court documents. »
Silence immediately fell over the room.
Elliot came and sat next to me.
That’s when I discovered what he had been doing during the previous weeks.
He had begun to gather everything that Daniel had neglected since his departure.
- School payments that had not been made.
- Unpaid medical bills.
- Messages in which Daniel refused to help pay for groceries because he said he was « starting a new life ».
- Screenshots of posts in which Daniel talked about the luxurious honeymoon that he and Claire had already booked.
But Elliot hadn’t simply kept those items.
He had brought everything to my lawyer who was handling the divorce.
