My husband, Daniel, and I had been married for eighteen years when, one evening, without the slightest warning, he announced to me that our marriage was over.
I absolutely did not expect what was going to happen next.
He looked at me and simply said:
« Let’s not make a big deal out of it. I’m leaving. I’m with Claire now. »
I felt my stomach clench.
Clear.
My own little sister.
For a few seconds, I was unable to understand what he had actually just told me.
« Claire? My sister? How could you do such a thing to me? »
Daniel simply shrugged.
« I’m fed up with our whole life revolving around diapers, crying, and bills. I’ve had enough. I want to live for myself. Claire isn’t burdened by children, and I like that. »
At that moment, I felt as if the ground was disappearing beneath my feet.
Eighteen years of marriage swept away in a few sentences
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
Daniel and I had built a life together for eighteen years. We had seven sons, and each of them had been wanted.
This family wasn’t something that simply « happened » to us. We chose it together.
And now Daniel was talking about our children as if they had become a burden he suddenly wanted to get rid of.
Then he confessed to me that his relationship with Claire had already been going on for more than six months.
This revelation devastated me.
So it wasn’t a decision made on a whim. For months, my husband and sister had hidden their affair from me while I continued to live normally, convinced that the two people were still part of my family in the way I had always known it.
Daniel was the man with whom I had spent eighteen years.
Claire was my sister.
Two of the people I trusted most had just betrayed me at the same time.
The day their father left home
I will never forget the sound of the door when Daniel left.
I stayed there with our sons while they watched their father walk away.
This moment remains etched in my memory because it no longer concerned just my wedding. Seven children had also just seen their father leave the family home.
Shortly afterwards, I called Claire.
I needed to tell her exactly what I thought about what she had just done.
But her reaction left me even more stunned.
She laughed.
« Oh, darling, don’t be so dramatic. Love is love. Daniel and I are meant for each other. That’s all. »
There was apparently neither shame nor hesitation in her voice.
For me, on the contrary, my whole life seemed to be collapsing.
