We returned to the hospital the following morning.
The doctor looked through the records.
“You’re correct,” he said. “The original birth certificate was filed three months ago.”
“Then why did everyone think she was born yesterday?”
“Because Elena was transferred here after suffering a severe medical emergency.”
“So the baby was already living?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
The doctor hesitated.
“That’s what authorities are investigating.”
Marcus stared at him.
“Who had custody?”
“No clear guardian.”
I felt cold.
“Where has she been for three months?”
The doctor lowered his voice.
“With a temporary caregiver.”
“Who?”
He gave us a name.
Rachel Hale.
I looked at Marcus.
His face went completely white.
“My sister.”
For eleven years, I had heard Marcus talk about his sister.
Rachel had always been distant.
She lived in another state.
She never visited.
She never attended family gatherings.
She had supposedly wanted nothing to do with them.
But now her name was attached to the baby.
“Why would your sister have this child?”
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t know.”
A nurse entered.
She was carrying a folder.
“We found another letter.”
She handed it to me.
It was addressed to Marcus.
I opened it.
The handwriting was Elena’s.
Marcus,
I didn’t know how else to reach you. Rachel told me you wanted nothing to do with this child. She said your wife would never accept another baby because of her medical condition.
My hands started shaking.
I continued.
I believed her.
The next line made Marcus close his eyes.
She told me the only way to protect my daughter was to disappear.
PART 7 — THE LIE INSIDE THE FAMILY
Marcus sat down.
“Rachel lied to her.”
I couldn’t speak.
The letter continued.
She said you had chosen your family over this baby before you ever knew her.
Then another sentence.
But I don’t believe her anymore.
Elena had apparently discovered the truth only weeks before her death.
Rachel had been receiving financial support from her.
She had promised to provide childcare.
Instead, she had isolated Elena, controlled access to Marcus, and convinced her that we would reject the baby.
The more we read, the worse it became.
Rachel hadn’t merely hidden a child.
She had built an entire story around us.
And there was one final page.
I am sick. I don’t know how much time I have.
If I don’t survive, please take my daughter.
Her name is Lily.
I looked toward Marcus.
“The baby has a name.”
He was crying openly now.
“Lily.”
I whispered the name.
For the first time, the little girl stopped being a mystery.
She was a child.
A child who had spent three months being passed from one secret to another.
And she had no idea how badly the adults around her had failed her.
