My Husband Said We Couldn’t Keep Our Baby — Then I Saw the Mark on Her Neck
PART 2 — THE MARK
My hands began to shake.
“What are you talking about?”
Nathan pointed toward the baby in his arms.
“Look at her neck.”
I slowly turned my head.
The nurse had wrapped our daughter in a pink blanket, leaving only her tiny face and part of her neck exposed.
At first, I saw nothing unusual.
Then the nurse gently adjusted the blanket.
And I saw it.
A small, dark birthmark just beneath her left ear.
It wasn’t large.
Maybe the size of a coin.
But the moment Nathan saw me looking at it, tears began streaming down his face.
“You recognize it,” he whispered.
I stared at him.
“No. I don’t.”
He shook his head.
“Yes, you do.”
Then he leaned closer.
“That exact mark belonged to someone we knew.”
My heart began pounding.
“Who?”
Nathan looked toward the hospital door to make sure nobody was listening.
Then he whispered a name I hadn’t heard in more than twenty years.
“Emily.”
I froze.
Emily had been Nathan’s younger sister.
She had disappeared when she was seventeen.
Everyone had assumed she’d run away.
But Nathan had never believed that.
Neither had his parents.
“What does Emily have to do with our daughter?”
Nathan looked down at the baby.
“Everything.”
PART 3 — THE GIRL WHO DISAPPEARED
Twenty-two years earlier, Emily had vanished from her family’s home.
She had left behind her clothes, her schoolbooks and her favorite necklace.
No note.
No phone.
No explanation.
The police investigated for months.
There were searches.
Posters.
Interviews.
Nothing.
Eventually, the case went cold.
Nathan was only nineteen at the time, but he had never stopped blaming himself.
“I was supposed to pick her up that night,” he whispered.
“What happened?”
“My friends convinced me to stay out longer. Emily called me twice.”
He swallowed.
“I ignored both calls.”
I reached for his hand.
“That’s not your fault.”
He shook his head.
“You don’t understand.”
He looked at our daughter again.
“The last voicemail she ever left me said something strange.”
“What did she say?”
Nathan’s voice broke.
“She said, ‘If anything happens to me, don’t let Mom give my baby away.’”
I stared at him.
“Her baby?”
Nathan nodded.
“We didn’t know what she meant.”
Until that moment.
PART 4 — THE SECRET
A nurse came into the room to check the babies.
Nathan immediately wiped his eyes.
He handed our daughter back to the nurse.
When the nurse left, he turned toward me.
“After Emily disappeared, my mother told everyone she had never been pregnant.”
I frowned.
“Why would she say that?”
“Because she was.”
My entire body went cold.
“What?”
Nathan reached into the pocket of his hospital jacket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
It showed a teenage Emily standing beside an older woman.
Emily was visibly pregnant.
I stared at the picture.
“When did you get this?”
“Last year.”
“From who?”
“My mother’s sister.”
He looked at me.
“She gave it to me after our mother died.”
I couldn’t speak.
Then Nathan pointed toward the baby’s neck.
“Emily had the same birthmark.”
PART 5 — THE IMPOSSIBLE QUESTION
I looked at our daughter.
Then at Nathan.
“You think she’s Emily’s daughter?”
“I don’t know.”
“But you’re saying she could be?”
Nathan nodded.
“That would mean…”
Neither of us finished the sentence.
The door opened.
A doctor entered with a folder.
“Mrs. Carter, your daughters are doing wonderfully.”
I smiled weakly.
“Doctor, can I ask you something?”
“Of course.”
I pointed toward our third daughter.
“Was anything unusual noted during her examination?”
The doctor checked the chart.
“No major abnormalities.”
“What about the birthmark?”
She looked at it.
“That was documented during the newborn exam.”
My heart raced.
“Did you take any genetic samples?”
The doctor paused.
“We took the standard newborn blood sample.”
Nathan looked at me.
Then he said:
“We need a DNA test.”
The doctor seemed surprised.
“Are you concerned about a medical condition?”
Nathan shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at our daughter.
“We’re concerned about her identity.”
