I was twenty-six years old and had never been intimate with a man.
Grandpa-grandson relationship
It wasn’t something I was ashamed of. I had dated some men, but I had never met anyone I trusted enough to take that step.

Grandpa’s stories
Interestingly, my father seemed much more concerned about the way I behaved near a particular man.

My grandfather.
Grandpa George had practically helped raise me.
When I was little, I followed him everywhere. Even after I became an adult, I hugged him, he would rest his head on his shoulder while we watched TV and sometimes jokingly, I would sit on his lap for one photo, like I’ve done since I was a kid.
Dad hated him.

“Dad, it’s Grandpa.
I know exactly who it is. Just be careful with him.

But sometimes his expression suggested that it was not all.
Grandpa noticed it too.
One Thanksgiving, Dad saw me sitting on the arm of Grandpa’s chair, with his legs partially resting on his lap.
“Emily. Move.
Grandfather immediately looked away.
I got up angry.
I later confronted Dad in the kitchen.

“What’s wrong with you?”
His response left me stunned.
“You’ll someday understand why I keep telling you.

—Abuelo… ¿por qué?
