The object inside the pocket was a small plastic evidence bag.
Inside it was a photograph.
I stared at it for several seconds before I understood what I was seeing.
It was a picture of me.
Not from our wedding.
Not from the hospital.
It had been taken the night of my accident.
My hands began shaking.
I turned the photograph over.
On the back, someone had written:
“She remembers nothing. Keep her that way.”
A cold wave passed through me.
Richard was still asleep across the room.
I looked at his peaceful face and suddenly the man I thought I knew seemed like a complete stranger.
